Clinton High School senior Lillian Heerwald is embracing her final volleyball season with a team-first mindset shaped by years of hard work and strong influences at home.
Heerwald, a 12th grader, credits her parents as her biggest inspiration. “My mom and dad inspire me through their own hard work and determination,” she said. “They always encourage me to be my best.” That foundation has carried into both the classroom and on the court, where she values discipline, growth and connection.
In school, Heerwald found a passion for English, sparked by a lasting impression from a former teacher. “Mrs. Miller was my English teacher last year,” she said. “She’s my favorite teacher and the reason that my favorite subject is English.” The same appreciation for mentorship shows in how she talks about her teammates.
As a member of the volleyball team, Heerwald emphasizes chemistry and support. “The thing I enjoy most about being on the team are the connections that are made by the end of the season,” she said. “At the end of the day, win or lose, we’re all family and we’re all there for each other.”
She points to setter Aliyah Lopez as a key contributor. “She’s a hard worker and her sets are amazing,” Heerwald said. Energy and personality also play a major role in the team dynamic, led in part by Aracelie Chavez. “She’s the most vocal person on the team, keeps a positive attitude, and always has us laughing,” Heerwald said.
Heerwald believes athletics have taught her lessons that extend beyond the game. “Being a part of a team has taught me to work hard for something bigger than myself,” she said. “When I’m at practice, I realize that my hard work isn’t just for me, it’s for my teammates.”
Off the court, Heerwald enjoys listening to music, driving and running, balancing competition with time to recharge. As for her playing style, she keeps it simple. “I prefer a standing serve because I haven’t practiced a jump serve very much and haven’t gotten the hang of it yet,” she said.
With a positive outlook and a focus on unity, Heerwald sees promise in the season ahead. “This year’s team is already starting off on a good note, filled with positive energy,” she said. “I can already tell that we’re all going to get along and share so many laughs together.”
