For Clinton High School senior Aliyah Lopez, athletics have provided more than competition. Through volleyball and soccer, Lopez has learned the value of adaptability, positivity, and leading teammates through every challenge.
Lopez has been a multi-sport athlete throughout her high school career, taking on several roles in both volleyball and soccer. On the volleyball court, she has played libero, setter, and outside hitter, her current position. In soccer, Lopez has contributed as a striker, attacking midfielder, and left winger.
That willingness to fill different roles has helped shape Lopez into a dependable teammate, especially during her senior season.
“I have learned in volleyball to be persistent and not to give up. It has taught me to become more like a leader and to be positive at all times,” Lopez said.
One of Lopez’s favorite athletic memories came during her sophomore year, when Clinton advanced to regionals. The school community showed its support by organizing a send-off for the team, creating a moment that still stands out as she reflects on her career.
“The best memory I have is when we went to regionals for my sophomore year, and the school had a send-off for us. The biggest accomplishment for me as a senior has been being able to help and guide my teammates,” Lopez said.
As a senior, Lopez values the opportunity to use her experience to encourage younger teammates. Her growth as a leader was influenced by former teammate Lexi Conway, whom Lopez credits for setting a strong example through consistent support and guidance.
“Lexi Conway has left a huge impression on me. She was such a great leader, always helping and guiding me to get better,” Lopez said.
Lopez also draws motivation from her mother, whose belief has helped her stay focused even during difficult moments. That encouragement aligns with the advice Lopez carries with her in athletics and in life: continue working when circumstances become challenging.
“My mother always inspires me to push myself and to never give up. She believes in me even when I doubt myself,” Lopez said.
Her appreciation extends beyond one teacher or coach. Lopez said each teacher she has had has contributed to her growth during her years at Clinton.
“I don’t have a favorite teacher. I think they all have helped me and guided me throughout the years,” Lopez said.
As Lopez finishes her high school career, she remains thankful for the people who have supported her through volleyball, soccer, and every stage of her journey.
“Thank you to all my family, friends, and coaches for all the support throughout high school,” Lopez said.
