Clinton High School senior Scout Acosta is driven by a combination of family support, personal faith and a commitment to steady improvement, both in the classroom and in competition.
“I am inspired by my family and my faith,” Acosta said. “My family has always supported me and pushed me to become the best version of myself. My faith inspires me to work hard, treat others with respect, and continue growing as a person and an athlete.”
A multi-sport athlete, Acosta balances cross country and golf while maintaining a strong academic focus. English is his favorite subject, and he credits a past teacher for making a lasting impact. “My favorite teacher is my accounting teacher from junior year, Mrs. Ray,” he said. “She made class enjoyable and always helped her students learn and improve.”
On the course, Acosta relies on mental toughness to push through the most challenging moments. “During long runs in competition, I focus on staying tough mentally and reminding myself to physically push through whatever pain I have,” he said. “I think about my team and most importantly, finishing strong.”
Team culture plays a major role in his experience. “Being surrounded by people who want to be better makes every practice and meet so much more enjoyable,” Acosta said.
Outside of school competition, he spends much of his time refining his golf game while also building endurance for cross country. He prefers outdoor training, embracing all conditions. “Even if it is very cold outside, I enjoy running on the pavement or through the trees taking in all of the scenery around me,” he said.
Acosta’s personal best in the 5K is 20 minutes, 52 seconds, a mark he achieved during a run with friends. He credits athletics with shaping his mindset. “It has taught me discipline, perseverance, and the importance of hard work,” he said.
After graduation, Acosta plans to attend the Naval Academy and compete in Division I golf. If that path changes, he intends to attend Oklahoma State University to study finance or accounting.
